John Mulaney

John Mulaney married multimedia artist Annamarie Tendler in 2014. Their separation was announced in 2021, and their divorce was finalized in January 2022. Mulaney married actress Olivia Munn in July 2024, and they have two children, a son born in 2021 and a daughter born via surrogate in 2024.

Mulaney has discussed his struggles with alcoholism, cocaine dependence, and prescription drug abuse in interviews and comedy performances. He entered a drug rehabilitation program in December 2020 and moved into outpatient care in February 2021. His experiences with treatment and recovery became central material in his 2023 Netflix special Baby J.

After graduating from Georgetown University in 2004, Mulaney moved to New York City and worked as an office assistant at Comedy Central. He joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live in 2008 and remained with the program for several seasons. He and Bill Hader co-created Stefon, a recurring character played by Hader, and Mulaney also contributed to Weekend Update and wrote monologues for hosts.

Mulaney continued performing stand-up while working in television. His early releases included the comedy album The Top Part in 2009 and the special New in Town in 2012. His later specials The Comeback Kid and Kid Gorgeous at Radio City received critical acclaim, with Kid Gorgeous winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special. He returned to host Saturday Night Live six times and joined the program's Five-Timers Club in 2022.

Mulaney developed the comedy act Oh, Hello with Nick Kroll, whom he met at Georgetown University. Mulaney performed as George St. Geegland, an elderly Upper West Side character, opposite Kroll's Gil Faizon. The act appeared on television, toured as a live show, and became Oh, Hello on Broadway in 2016 and 2017. A filmed version was later released on Netflix.

He created, wrote, produced, and starred in the Fox sitcom Mulaney, which ran for one season from 2014 to 2015. He also became a writer and producer on the IFC mockumentary series Documentary Now!, contributing episodes that parodied documentaries and appearing as Simon Sawyer in the acclaimed musical episode "Original Cast Album: Co-Op."

Mulaney made his feature-film voice-acting debut as Peter Porker, also known as Spider-Ham, in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018. He later voiced Chip in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers and Big Jack Horner in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. He also voiced Andrew Glouberman on the animated Netflix series Big Mouth, which was co-created by Nick Kroll.

His other screen roles include Henry David Thoreau in Dickinson, Stevie in The Bear, and Daniel Clyde-Otis in Poker Face. Mulaney hosted and executive produced the Netflix live talk series John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA in 2024 and its follow-up, Everybody's Live with John Mulaney, in 2025. He also appeared in the Broadway production All In: Comedy About Love and served as a writer and co-host of the Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special.

Mulaney has cited Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Conan O'Brien, and Bob Newhart among his comedy influences. He has also discussed collecting stand-up albums and named records by Mitch Hedberg, Eddie Izzard, and Dave Attell among his favorites.

His television writing has earned major industry recognition. He won a Peabody Award with the Saturday Night Live writing staff for their satirical work on the 2008 United States presidential election. He also won a Primetime Emmy Award for co-writing the 2011 Saturday Night Live song "Justin Timberlake Monologue" with Seth Meyers, Justin Timberlake, and Katreese Barnes.
