Miller has maintained a high degree of privacy regarding his personal life since his early career on the internet. He has lived in Brooklyn, New York, and maintains a residence in Los Angeles for work.

In 2014, Miller revealed that he experiences stress-induced seizures resulting from an undisclosed neurological disorder. The physical strain associated with this condition, alongside throat tissue damage caused by his early comedic vocal performances, contributed directly to his decision to step away from comedy web video production. Health issues have also occasionally led him to adjust or shorten live touring schedules, including dates on his 2023 Pandemonium World Tour.

George Kusunoki Miller was born in Osaka, Japan, to an Australian father and a Japanese mother. He grew up in the Higashinada ward of Kobe, Japan, and attended Canadian Academy, an international school where he graduated in 2012. During his youth in Japan, he began producing music, listening to boom bap instrumentals, and singing with friends.

At age 18, Miller moved from Japan to the United States. He enrolled at the New York Institute of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2016. Throughout his adolescence, he experimented with web video production, launching channels such as DizastaMusic in 2008.

Miller developed the satirical character Filthy Frank in 2011, intending the persona to serve as an unconventional anti-vlogger. He eventually expanded his productions across the YouTube channels TVFilthyFrank and TooDamnFilthy, featuring extreme sketches, crude satire, rants, and recurring characters such as Pink Guy. In 2013, a video from his channel initiated the global viral phenomenon known as the Harlem Shake, which propelled producer Baauer's single to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Under his Pink Guy alias, Miller produced satirical comedy hip-hop albums, including Pink Guy and Pink Season. In January 2017, Pink Season debuted at number 70 on the Billboard 200. In September 2017, he published a book titled Francis of the Filth, which served as a narrative culmination of the web series. On December 29, 2017, Miller officially announced his retirement from all Filthy Frank and Pink Guy content to focus entirely on serious music composition and protect his health.

Miller originally released serious music under aliases such as PinkOmega and Joji on SoundCloud in late 2015, sharing tracks including "Thom" and "You Suck Charlie". In 2017, he signed with the music collective and label 88rising, making his live debut as Joji in Los Angeles. That November, he released his debut commercial EP, In Tongues, followed by his first studio album, Ballads 1, in October 2018. Ballads 1 debuted at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, making Miller the first Asian-born artist to achieve that position, driven by the platinum single "Slow Dancing in the Dark".

His second studio album, Nectar, arrived in September 2020 after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, featuring singles like "Sanctuary", "Run", and "Gimme Love". In 2022, Miller released the melancholic piano ballad "Glimpse of Us", which reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Australian ARIA singles chart, preceding his third studio album, Smithereens. After an artistic hiatus, he launched his own imprint, Palace Creek, distributed by Virgin Music, releasing singles such as "Pixelated Kisses" ahead of his 2026 album Piss in the Wind and the worldwide Solaris Tour.

Miller's musical output as Joji incorporates elements of alternative R&B, lo-fi, trip hop, and downtempo electronic pop. His tracks frequently feature minimalistic production, melancholic themes, and dark romantic lyrics exploring emotional turbulence and relationship friction.

He has cited artists such as James Blake, Radiohead, Shlohmo, and Donald Glover as major inspirations, while also drawing from the Japanese hip-hop and boom bap beats he listened to while growing up in Kobe.
