Kid Rock

Robert James Ritchie was raised in Romeo, Michigan, in a family whose father, William "Bill" Ritchie, owned multiple car dealerships. The family property included an apple orchard, horses, and a large home. Ritchie attended Romeo High School and helped with the orchard and horses while growing up.

In the 1980s, he became interested in hip-hop, learned to breakdance, and taught himself to rap and DJ. He performed in talent shows and around the Detroit area before joining the hip-hop group Beast Crew. Through Detroit's hip-hop circuit, he met D-Nice, who helped connect him with Boogie Down Productions shows and eventually with Jive Records. Ritchie signed with Jive at 17, adopting the professional name Kid Rock.

Kid Rock released his debut album, Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast, on Jive Records in 1990. After leaving the label, he signed with Continuum Records and released The Polyfuze Method in 1993 and the Fire It Up EP later that year. His music increasingly incorporated live instrumentation, leading to the formation of the band Twisted Brown Trucker in 1994. Producer Mike E. Clark played an important role in developing the harder rock-oriented sound of this period.

Kid Rock released Early Mornin' Stoned Pimp independently in 1996, building a local following through concerts, homemade tapes, and direct promotion. In 1997, Jason Flom and Atlantic Records signed him after hearing demos that included "Somebody's Gotta Feel This" and "I Got One for Ya." The resulting album, Devil Without a Cause, was released in 1998 and became his breakthrough, driven by "Bawitdaba," "Cowboy," and "Only God Knows Why."

During this period, Kid Rock toured with artists including Limp Bizkit and Metallica and performed at Woodstock 1999. His association with Detroit rapper Eminem began while both were developing their careers in the local hip-hop scene, where they challenged each other in rap battles. Kid Rock also worked closely with Joe C., whose role as his hype man became a notable part of his live performances until Joe C.'s death in 2000.

Kid Rock's 2001 album Cocky expanded beyond his earlier rap-rock style. Its country-influenced ballad "Picture," recorded with Sheryl Crow, introduced him to a wider audience and became his most successful single from the album. The follow-up albums Kid Rock in 2003 and Rock n Roll Jesus in 2007 moved further toward Southern rock and country. Rock n Roll Jesus became his first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

"All Summer Long," released from Rock n Roll Jesus, became an international hit through its combination of elements associated with Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London." Kid Rock performed the song with members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the collaboration connected his music with the Southern rock tradition.

He continued the country-oriented direction on Born Free, produced by Rick Rubin, and on First Kiss. His later albums included Rebel Soul, Sweet Southern Sugar, and Bad Reputation. His music has been characterized as a mixture of rap rock, hard rock, hip-hop, country, and blues, while "Cowboy" has been identified as an influential early example of country rap.

Kid Rock is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who has said he can play every instrument used in his backing band. His approach developed from sample-based hip-hop into guitar-driven rock that incorporated hip-hop rhythms, Southern rock, country music, and classic-rock references. He has described his style humorously as "creatively confused."

His listed influences include Bob Seger, the Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C., Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, David Allan Coe, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Warren Zevon, and Jim Croce. Twisted Brown Trucker became both his live and studio band, supporting the transition from DJ-centered performances to a full rock presentation.

Beyond music, Kid Rock has acted and provided voice work. He played Robbie in Joe Dirt, voiced a character called Kidney Rock in Osmosis Jones, and appeared in Biker Boyz and Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector. He also made television appearances in programs including The Simpsons, King of the Hill, CSI: NY, and Silicon Valley.

Kid Rock has one son, Robert James Ritchie Jr., who was born in 1993. He raised his son as a single father after learning that only one of two children he had believed were his was biologically his. Ritchie became a grandfather in 2014 when his son's daughter was born.

Kid Rock was married to actress Pamela Anderson from 2006 to 2007. They had previously dated and become engaged before ending their relationship, later reconciling and marrying. Anderson experienced a miscarriage during their marriage, and she filed for divorce in November 2006. The divorce was finalized in February 2007.

Kid Rock describes himself as libertarian and has supported the Republican Party. He endorsed Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential campaign, and Romney used "Born Free" as a campaign theme. Kid Rock later endorsed Ben Carson and expressed support for Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

In 2017, he created a publicized "Kid Rock for U.S. Senate" campaign that he later clarified was a hoax. Merchandise from the campaign raised $122,000, which he donated to a voter-registration group. He performed at the 2024 Republican National Convention and has appeared with Trump in political and official settings.

His political visibility has accompanied controversy over his past use of the Confederate flag, his public statements, and his opposition to some COVID-19 venue requirements. He stopped displaying the Confederate flag at his concerts in 2007 and said in 2011 that he had officially distanced himself from it.

Kid Rock has supported military personnel through USO tours and performances in Iraq and other locations. He also established the Kid Rock Foundation, which raises funds for causes including care packages for U.S. service members. His charitable work has included benefit performances for disaster relief and other organizations.

He has advocated measures intended to make concert tickets more accessible and to discourage ticket scalping. In 2013, he promoted a tour built around low-cost tickets, free parking, and other concessions, while also giving some seats directly to fans.

Kid Rock was inducted into the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame in 2018. He has received American Music Awards, Billboard honors, CMT recognition, a World Music Award, and a People's Choice Award, and has been nominated for five Grammy Awards.
