Early life

Kiernan Brennan Shipka was born in Chicago, Illinois, to John Young Shipka, a real-estate developer, and Erin Ann Brennan. Her family relocated to Los Angeles when she was six to support her acting career. She began ballroom dancing at five and later earned a black belt in taekwondo.

Shipka began commercial-print modeling as a baby and completed more than 200 print jobs and two dozen commercials before moving into television. She pursued her education through online studies at Laurel Springs School, which allowed her to balance school with professional commitments.

2000 to 2017: Beginnings and Mad Men

Shipka made her television debut at five months old in an episode of the medical drama ER. She followed with small roles in programs including Monk, Heroes, MADtv, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! before appearing as Sally Draper on AMC's Mad Men.

Shipka won the role of Sally after two auditions. She initially appeared as a recurring guest star, then became a series regular beginning with the show's fourth season. Sally was the daughter of Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm, and Shipka's performance drew critical praise for its emotional depth. As part of the ensemble cast, she won Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2008 and 2009.

During the Mad Men era, Shipka expanded into film and voice acting. She appeared in Carriers, House Broken, Flowers in the Attic, Very Good Girls, and One & Two, voiced Marnie in the English dub of When Marnie Was There, and played B. D. Hyman in the FX series Feud: Bette and Joan. She also voiced Jinora in The Legend of Korra from 2012 to 2014. In 2014, Time named her one of "The 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014," while IndieWire included her among its actors to watch under 20.

2018 to 2021: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

In 2018, Shipka began starring as Sabrina Spellman in Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a dark fantasy series based on the comic series. The show concluded with 36 episodes across four parts, establishing Shipka as the lead of a major streaming production.

She reprised Sabrina in two episodes of Riverdale. Shipka also appeared opposite Stanley Tucci in the horror film The Silence, playing a deaf teenager. She learned American Sign Language for the role, and later co-starred in the Christmas romantic comedy Let It Snow.

2022 to present: Further work
