Personal life

Lohan grew up in Merrick and Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island after being born in New York City. She began homeschooling in the eleventh grade as her acting career expanded.

Early life, first acting roles, and The Parent Trap

Lohan began working as a child model with Ford Models at age three. She appeared in more than 60 television commercials and modeled for brands including Calvin Klein Kids and Abercrombie. Her first recurring television role was Alexandra "Alli" Fowler on the soap opera Another World from 1996 to 1997.

Her feature-film debut came in Disney's The Parent Trap (1998), in which she played the separated twins Hallie Parker and Annie James. The performance earned her a Young Artist Award and a three-film contract with Disney. She followed the film with Disney television projects including Life-Size and Get a Clue.

Mean Girls and teen stardom

Lohan's performance opposite Jamie Lee Curtis in Disney's Freaky Friday (2003) brought major critical and commercial success. She played a teenager whose consciousness switches bodies with her mother, and she learned guitar and singing for the role. The film earned her the 2004 MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance.

In 2004, Lohan starred in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and Mean Girls. Written by Tina Fey, Mean Girls established Lohan as a leading teen star through her role as Cady Heron. She later reunited with the film's cast members Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried for a 2024 Walmart advertising project, in which she again played Cady Heron. Lohan also hosted Saturday Night Live three times between 2004 and 2006 and became the youngest host of the MTV Movie Awards at age 17.

Music career

Lohan signed with Casablanca Records after recording songs for film soundtracks. Her debut studio album, Speak, was released in 2004, reached number four on the Billboard 200, and was certified platinum. Its singles included "Rumors" and "Over," with the latter reaching number one on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.

Her second album, A Little More Personal (Raw), followed in 2005 and reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 before receiving gold certification. Lohan co-wrote most of the songs and directed the video for "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," which featured her sister Aliana. In 2008, her single "Bossy" reached number one on the U.S. Dance Club Songs chart. She later released "Back to Me" in 2020 and appeared on Duran Duran's song "Danceophobia" from the album Paper Gods.

Public struggles and career interruptions

Lohan's career was disrupted during the late 2000s and early 2010s by legal troubles, probation, rehabilitation, and drug and alcohol misuse. Her 2007 films included Chapter 27, I Know Who Killed Me, and Georgia Rule, while production and casting on several other projects were affected by her rehabilitation and legal obligations.

She continued working in films and television, appearing in Labor Pains, Machete, Liz & Dick, and The Canyons. She also returned to television with guest appearances on Ugly Betty, Glee, Anger Management, and 2 Broke Girls. In 2014, the eight-part docuseries Lindsay followed her life and work after she moved to New York City.

Theater, break from acting, and other endeavors

Lohan made her stage debut in 2014 in the London West End revival of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow. She played Karen, a secretary to a Hollywood executive, in a role previously associated with Madonna. Critical responses were mixed, but some reviewers praised her ability to hold the stage.

Lohan expanded into fashion and hospitality during this period. She launched the 6126 clothing line in 2008, became an artistic adviser to Emanuel Ungaro in 2009, and later created collaborations with Lily Baker, Allbirds, and Nestig. She opened the Lohan Beach House resort in Mykonos in 2018 and appeared in the MTV reality series Lindsay Lohan's Beach Club in 2019. She also served as a judge on The Masked Singer Australia and hosted the podcast The Lohdown with Lindsay Lohan.

Netflix movies and return to film

Lohan returned to major film acting with Netflix's romantic comedy Falling for Christmas (2022), playing a hotel heiress who develops amnesia after a skiing accident. She also performed songs for the soundtrack, including a version of "Jingle Bell Rock." The film became the most-watched holiday movie released in the United States in 2022, and her performance received generally positive reviews.

Under a two-picture Netflix deal, Lohan starred in Irish Wish (2024) and Our Little Secret (2024).
