Tyrese Maxey

Maxey is the son of Denyse and Tyrone Maxey and has three sisters, Denasia, Talia and Keiara. Tyrone played college basketball for the Washington State Cougars and later worked in player development and coaching, including at Southern Methodist University. Maxey has credited his father with shaping his approach to basketball, including training inspired by video analysis of Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving.

Maxey's home in Voorhees Township, New Jersey, caught fire on Christmas Eve in 2021 while his family was visiting for the holiday. Nobody was injured, and the Philadelphia 76ers provided housing accommodations and other resources for Maxey and his family. He also operates the Tyrese Maxey Foundation, which partnered with Youth Services, Inc. to help prevent truancy in Philadelphia-area schools.

At South Garland High School in Garland, Texas, Maxey became a consensus five-star recruit and one of the highest-ranked players in the 2019 class. He helped South Garland reach its first Texas state basketball tournament appearance in 2018 and scored 46 points in the state championship semifinals. As a senior, he was named a McDonald's All-American and Texas Mr. Basketball, while also graduating near the top of his class.

Maxey committed to the Kentucky Wildcats and made his college debut against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden shortly after his 19th birthday. He scored 26 points, setting a Kentucky freshman record for a debut. During the 2019-20 season, he averaged 14 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, earning second-team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman honors. He declared for the 2020 NBA draft after Kentucky's season ended prematurely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Maxey 21st overall in the 2020 NBA draft. He made his NBA debut in December 2020 and received his first start when injuries, illness and absences left Philadelphia with only enough players to meet the league minimum. Maxey scored 39 points in 44 minutes against the Denver Nuggets, setting an NBA rookie record for points in a first career start since 1970 and recording the most points by a 76ers rookie since Allen Iverson's 40-point game in 1997.

Maxey moved toward a starting role during the 2021-22 season after Ben Simmons refused to play for Philadelphia. The arrival of James Harden at the trade deadline allowed Maxey to return to his natural shooting-guard position, and he averaged 24.5 points in his first two games alongside Harden. In the 2022 playoffs, Maxey scored 38 points in Game 1 against the Toronto Raptors, becoming the youngest Philadelphia player to score at least 30 points in a postseason game.

His production continued to rise, including a 44-point game against Toronto in October 2022 and a 50-point performance against Indiana in November 2023. In the 2023-24 season, he averaged 25.9 points and 6.2 assists per game, earned his first All-Star selection and won the NBA Most Improved Player Award. He also received the NBA Sportsmanship Award, becoming the first player to win both awards and make the All-Star team in the same season.

Maxey scored 51 points against the Utah Jazz in February 2024 and 52 points against the San Antonio Spurs in April of that year. In the 2024 playoffs, he scored 46 points against the New York Knicks in Game 5 of the first round, including a 34-foot shot that tied the game with 8.1 seconds remaining in regulation.

He later produced a 54-point game against the Milwaukee Bucks, adding nine assists, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks. The performance made him the second player in 76ers history to record at least 50 points and nine assists in a game, after Wilt Chamberlain.

Maxey represented the United States at the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship in Canada. He averaged 13 points, 3.5 rebounds, three assists and three steals during the preliminary round, but an ankle injury kept him out of the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.

He returned for the gold-medal game against Canada, scoring two points in 12 minutes. The United States won 113-74 to claim the championship.
