Alexa Demie
Alexa Demie is an American actress and singer-songwriter known for playing Maddy Perez in the HBO drama series Euphoria. She is also recognized for her performances in feature films such as Jonah Hill's Mid90s and the drama Waves.
Early life and personal background
Demie was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in Atwater Village primarily by her mother, Rose Mendez, a makeup artist who emigrated from Michoacán, Mexico. She grew up speaking both English and Spanish in a household that included her mother, grandmother, and aunts. Her father was Scott Wilson Vanerstrom. On April 5, 2019, she legally changed her name from Alexa Demie Wilson Vanerstrom to Alexa Demie.
During high school, Demie designed and embellished wholesale sunglasses purchased in downtown Los Angeles, launching a line called Mainframe. The customized frames gained popularity internationally and were worn by celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, and G-Dragon, though Demie later ceased production after not receiving payment for her designs.
Demie has been in a relationship with singer-songwriter Christian Berishaj, known professionally as JMSN, since 2017. She has collaborated with him on multiple visual projects, appearing in and directing music videos for his songs.
Early screen roles and film work
Demie began writing songs and poetry at age twelve and later developed an interest in acting during her senior year of high school. Her early on-camera appearances included a role in the 2013 music video for Azealia Banks's "ATM Jam" and the 2015 short film Miles. She subsequently secured guest appearances on television series such as Ray Donovan, Love, and The OA.
Her feature film career started with a supporting role in the 2017 comedy-drama Brigsby Bear. In 2018, she gained wider attention as Estee in Jonah Hill's coming-of-age film Mid90s. The following year, she portrayed Alexis Lopez in the drama Waves, playing a high school student opposite Kelvin Harrison Jr. She appeared alongside actor Lucas Hedges in both Mid90s and Waves.
Breakthrough with Euphoria
After an audition for director Augustine Frizzell's film Never Goin' Back, Frizzell recommended Demie for the pilot of the HBO teen drama series Euphoria. Demie was cast as Maddy Perez, a confident high school student involved in a volatile relationship with Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi. Demie quickly emerged as one of the series' breakout performers.
On set, Demie actively collaborated with the makeup team to design Maddy's signature rhinestone and graphic eyeliner looks, which helped establish major beauty and fashion trends. Her performance on the series earned her an Imagen Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2022, as well as an MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Fight, shared with co-star Sydney Sweeney.
Music and artistic collaborations
Alongside her screen career, Demie has released original music, including her debut single "Girl Like Me" in 2016 and "Leopard Limo (Archive LL11)" in 2021. She was also featured on Pearl's 2016 track "Turnin' Tricks" and has directed music videos, including JMSN's "Talk Is Cheap" and "Love 2 U".
