Donny Osmond

Donny Osmond has been married to Debra Glenn since May 8, 1978. They have five sons: Don, Jeremy, Brandon, Christopher, and Joshua, and became grandparents in 2005.

Osmond was raised in Utah in a large family connected to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His siblings include performers Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Marie, Jimmy, Virl, and Tom Osmond. Virl and Tom were born deaf, and the family used sign language while performing together.

Osmond has spoken publicly about experiencing social anxiety, including during his long run in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His memoir, Life Is Just What You Make It: My Story So Far, discusses his teen stardom, stage career, and panic attacks.

Osmond began performing with his older brothers in the Osmond Brothers and joined them on The Andy Williams Show as a child. The group later became known as the Osmonds, with Donny serving as lead vocalist on songs including "One Bad Apple," which reached No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts in 1971.

He developed a solo career while continuing to perform with his brothers. His early hits included "Sweet and Innocent," "Go Away Little Girl," "Puppy Love," and "Hey Girl/I Knew You When." "Go Away Little Girl" reached No. 1 in the United States, while "Puppy Love" and "Hey Girl/I Knew You When" also reached the U.S. top 10.

The success made Osmond a major teen idol of the early 1970s. He and his brothers attracted an enthusiastic teenage following often called "Osmondmania," and his appearances on programs such as Here's Lucy expanded his profile beyond the family group.

After Donny Osmond and Marie Osmond appeared together on The Mike Douglas Show, ABC gave them their own variety program. The Donny & Marie Show premiered in 1976 and ran until 1979, combining musical performances, comedy sketches, and family-friendly entertainment. Its theme described Marie as "a little bit country" and Donny as "a little bit rock 'n' roll."

The siblings later reunited for the syndicated talk show Donny & Marie, which ran from 1998 to 2000. They also appeared together in the 1978 feature film Goin' Coconuts and co-hosted events including the 2008 Miss USA pageant.

In 2008, Donny and Marie began a Las Vegas residency at the Flamingo. The engagement was extended into an 11-year run, ending in November 2019 after 1,730 performances. The show earned Las Vegas Review-Journal awards for Best Show, Best All-Around Performer, and Best Singer.

Following the cancellation of The Donny & Marie Show, Osmond experienced a professional lull and attempted to move beyond his teen-idol image. With assistance from Peter Gabriel, he recorded new material that presented him as a contemporary pop performer.

Released in 1989, "Soldier of Love" reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and its follow-up single "Sacred Emotion" reached the U.S. top 20. The songs formed part of the comeback associated with his album Eyes Don't Lie.

Osmond later recorded music for film and television, including "I'll Make a Man Out of You" as the singing voice of Captain Li Shang in Disney's Mulan. In 2004, his single "Breeze On By," co-written with Gary Barlow, reached No. 8 on the United Kingdom charts.

Osmond made his Broadway debut as Johnny Jones in Little Johnny Jones in 1982. The revival closed after 29 previews and one regular performance, but he later found a major musical-theater role as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He performed the part for more than 2,000 performances in Toronto and Chicago during the 1990s.

Andrew Lloyd Webber selected Osmond to play Joseph in the 1999 film version. Osmond also returned to Broadway as Gaston in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, performing the role in 2006 and for the show's final Broadway performance in 2007.

His television hosting work included the syndicated game show Pyramid from 2002 to 2004 and the British version in 2007. He was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host for Pyramid in 2003.

Osmond competed with professional dancer Kym Johnson on the ninth season of Dancing with the Stars. He won the competition in 2009, defeating the field with performances that included an Argentine tango and a perfect-scoring freestyle. His victory gave him a playful family distinction because his sister Marie had previously reached the final stages of the show.

In 2019, Osmond appeared as the Peacock on the first season of The Masked Singer. He finished as the runner-up, performing while concealed behind the show's costume and character identity. He later appeared as a guest panelist on I Can See Your Voice.
