Kawhi Leonard

Leonard was born in Los Angeles, California, to Mark Leonard and Kim Robertson, and grew up alongside four older sisters. On January 18, 2008, his father was shot and killed at the car wash he owned in Compton, California. Despite the tragedy, Leonard chose to play in a high school basketball game the following evening, breaking down in tears after the contest concluded. The murder remains unsolved.

Leonard has been in a relationship with his girlfriend, Kishele Shipley, since their college years at San Diego State University. The couple has two children together. Known across the sports world for his reserved and taciturn personality, Leonard deliberately avoids social media, rarely grants media interviews, and keeps details of his home life out of the public spotlight.

Leonard began his high school career at Canyon Springs High School before transferring to Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, California. During his senior season, he teamed with Tony Snell to lead the King High Wolves to a 30-3 record, averaging 22.6 points, 13.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3 blocks per game, which earned him the California Mr. Basketball award in 2009.

He played two seasons of collegiate basketball for the San Diego State Aztecs under head coach Steve Fisher. As a freshman in 2009-10, he averaged 12.7 points and 9.9 rebounds, leading the team to the Mountain West Conference tournament title and an NCAA tournament appearance. In his sophomore year, Leonard averaged 15.7 points and 10.4 rebounds, guiding the Aztecs to a 34-3 record and a run to the Sweet 16. Following the season, he was named a consensus second-team All-American and declared for the NBA draft. San Diego State later retired his jersey number 15 in February 2020.

Selected 15th overall in the 2011 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers, Leonard was immediately traded on draft night to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for George Hill. He made an instant impact under head coach Gregg Popovich, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2012. By his second season, he helped the Spurs reach the 2013 NBA Finals, where they fell to the Miami Heat in seven games.

In 2014, Leonard helped lead the Spurs to a rematch with Miami in the NBA Finals. Averaging 17.8 points on 61 percent shooting, he captured his first NBA championship and was named NBA Finals MVP at 22 years of age, becoming the third-youngest recipient in league history. He subsequently earned back-to-back NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2015 and 2016, leading the league in steals in 2015 and finishing as the MVP runner-up in 2016. An ankle injury in the 2017 Western Conference finals and a persistent right quadriceps injury limited his availability during the 2017-18 season, leading to a trade request in the summer of 2018.

In July 2018, the Spurs traded Leonard and Danny Green to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a draft pick. In his lone season in Toronto, Leonard led the franchise on a historic playoff march. In Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers, he made the first Game 7 buzzer-beating shot in NBA history, hitting a corner jumper that bounced on the rim four times before dropping in to seal a 92-90 victory.

Leonard powered the Raptors past the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference finals and guided the franchise to its first NBA title by defeating the Golden State Warriors in six games in the 2019 NBA Finals. Leonard won his second Finals MVP award, becoming just the third player in NBA history to win the honor with multiple franchises, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James. He accumulated 732 points during the 2019 postseason, the third-highest total in a single playoff run in league history.

Leonard signed with his hometown Los Angeles Clippers in July 2019, joining fellow All-Star Paul George. During his first season with the Clippers, Leonard won the All-Star Game MVP award at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game, the first year the trophy was renamed in honor of Kobe Bryant. He led the Clippers to the Western Conference semifinals in 2020 and helped propel them to their first conference finals appearance in franchise history in 2021, though a partial tear of his right anterior cruciate ligament sidelined him for the final rounds of the postseason and the entirety of the 2021-22 campaign.

Upon returning from injury, Leonard continued to serve as the centerpiece of the Clippers roster, recording notable scoring performances including a career-best 55 points against the Detroit Pistons in December 2025. Across his tenure with Los Angeles, he earned multiple All-NBA and All-Defensive team selections while helping the team remain a regular postseason contender in the Western Conference.
