Lynda Carter

Carter was married to talent agent Ron Samuels from 1977 to 1982. She married attorney Robert A. Altman on January 29, 1984, and they had two children, James Clifford Altman and Jessica Altman. The family lived in a Georgian-style home in Potomac, Maryland, which Carter and Altman built in 1987. Altman died in 2021 after a battle with myelofibrosis.

In 2008, Carter said that she had entered a rehabilitation clinic for alcoholism and had been sober for nearly 10 years. She has also advocated for health-related causes, including awareness of irritable bowel syndrome, which had affected her mother for many years.

Carter's breakthrough came when she was cast as Diana Prince and Wonder Woman in the television series Wonder Woman. The series ran for three seasons from 1975 to 1979, first on ABC and later on CBS, and made her an enduring symbol of the character. The cast included Lyle Waggoner, who played Steve Trevor.

Carter performed many of her own stunts on the series, including hanging from a helicopter during the episode "Anschluss '77." She later returned to the role in the post-credits scene of Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), playing the Amazon warrior Asteria. In 1985, DC Comics named her one of the honorees in Fifty Who Made DC Great for her work on the television series.

Carter began performing as a singer during her teenage years. At 15, she sang in a local pizza parlor, and at 16 she joined a band called The Relatives with two cousins. Actor Gary Burghoff played drums for the group when it performed for three months at the Sahara Hotel and Casino lounge in Las Vegas. In 1970, Carter toured with The Garfin Gathering before returning to Arizona in 1972 to pursue acting.

She released the album Portrait in 1978 and later issued At Last, Crazy Little Things, and Red, Rock n' Blues. Her one-woman cabaret show, An Evening with Lynda Carter, toured venues including the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Catalina Jazz Club. She played Mama Morton in the West End production of Chicago from September to November 2005.

After Wonder Woman, Carter continued to work in television and film. Her later credits include The Dukes of Hazzard, Sky High, Super Troopers, Super Troopers 2, and the television series Supergirl, in which she played U.S. President Olivia Marsdin in five episodes from 2016 to 2018. She also appeared in Smallville, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Two and a Half Men, and The Muppet Show.

Carter has provided voices for several video games, including The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls Online, and Fallout 4. For Fallout 4, she recorded five original songs and played the singer Magnolia. The song "Good Neighbor" from the game's soundtrack received a NAVGTR nomination for best song.

Carter received a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars in 2014 and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Gracie Awards in 2016. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018. In 2022, the National Museum of Mexican Art presented her with the Sor Juana Legacy Award, and she was inducted into the California Hall of Fame later that year.

Carter has supported Susan G. Komen for the Cure, abortion rights, and legal equality for LGBT people. She served as grand marshal of the Phoenix Pride Parade, the New York Pride Parades, and the Capital Pride Parade in Washington, D.C., and was grand marshal of the Washington, D.C., AIDS Walk in 2010.
