Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson is the son of former NBA player Mychal Thompson, who was the first overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft. His older brother Mychel Thompson played basketball at Pepperdine University and later appeared in the NBA, while his younger brother Trayce Thompson became a Major League Baseball player. Klay and Mychal became the fourth father-son duo to win NBA championships when Klay captured his first title with Golden State in 2015.

Thompson grew up with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where he was a childhood friend and Little League teammate of future NBA player Kevin Love. He was in a relationship with actor Laura Harrier from 2018 to early 2020 and began a relationship with rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2025.

Thompson played three seasons for the Washington State Cougars after graduating from Santa Margarita Catholic High School in California. He started all 33 games as a freshman, averaged 12.5 points per game, and was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.

He earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors in both his sophomore and junior seasons. In the 2011 Pac-10 tournament, he set tournament records with 43 points and eight three-pointers, then finished his junior season with Washington State's single-season scoring record of 733 points. Washington State retired his No. 1 jersey in 2020.

The Golden State Warriors selected Thompson 11th overall in the 2011 NBA draft. He became a starter during his rookie season and was named to the 2012 NBA All-Rookie First Team. With Stephen Curry, he formed the Warriors' high-scoring backcourt known as the “Splash Brothers.” The pair set successive NBA records for combined three-pointers in a season, making 484 in 2014, 525 in 2015, and 678 in the 2015-16 season.

Thompson helped Golden State win its first NBA championship since 1975 in 2015. The Warriors won additional titles in 2017 and 2018, reached a fifth consecutive NBA Finals in 2019, and won again in 2022. Thompson was selected to five consecutive NBA All-Star Games from 2015 through 2019, earned two All-NBA Third Team selections, and was named to the 2019 NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

Thompson set an NBA record by scoring 37 points in a single quarter against the Sacramento Kings in January 2015. He finished that game with 52 points and 11 three-pointers. In December 2016, he scored a career-high 60 points against the Indiana Pacers in fewer than 30 minutes, becoming the first player to reach 60 points in less than 30 minutes of action.

In October 2018, Thompson made an NBA-record 14 three-pointers in a game against the Chicago Bulls while scoring 52 points. He also made 11 three-pointers in Game 6 of the 2016 Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, helping Golden State recover from a 3-1 series deficit. His performances in decisive playoff games led to the nickname “Game 6 Klay.”

Thompson tore the ACL in his left knee during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals and missed the entire 2019-20 season. An Achilles tendon injury suffered during a pickup game then kept him out for the 2020-21 season. He returned to NBA action in January 2022 after more than two and a half years away and helped the Warriors win the 2022 championship.

After 13 seasons with Golden State, Thompson joined the Dallas Mavericks in 2024. He made six three-pointers in his Mavericks debut against the San Antonio Spurs, a franchise record for a debut game, and later passed Reggie Miller for fifth on the NBA's all-time three-pointers list. He agreed to a buyout with Dallas in 2026 and signed with the Miami Heat.

Thompson represented the United States at the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and the 2016 Summer Olympics. He won gold medals at all three tournaments, including Olympic gold with the United States team in Rio de Janeiro.
