Mikey Williams

Williams grew up playing basketball under the guidance of his parents, Mahlon and Charisse Williams, and spent much of his childhood playing on an outdoor court at his apartment complex. He began working as a ball boy for San Ysidro High School coach Terry Tucker, who recalled that Williams was difficult to keep out of the gym. Williams recorded his first official dunk at age 12 while playing for the San Diego Sharks on April 15, 2017.

In seventh and eighth grade, Williams was ranked the top player in the 2023 class by the Naismith National Youth All-American Report. He gained wider attention with the North Coast Blue Chips Amateur Athletic Union team, where he played alongside Bronny James, and later joined Compton Magic on the AAU circuit in 2019.

Williams began his high school career at San Ysidro High School in San Diego. In his debut on November 20, 2019, he scored 46 points, along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals, in a 98-46 victory over El Cajon Valley High School. He followed that performance with 50 points against Mission Bay High School.

On December 13, 2019, Williams scored 77 points and made nine three-pointers in a 116-52 win over Kearny High School. The performance set a CIF San Diego Section single-game scoring record and a California freshman single-game scoring record. He led San Ysidro to the CIF San Diego Section Division III title and averaged 29.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game as a freshman, earning the 2019-20 MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year award.

Williams transferred to Lake Norman Christian School in Huntersville, North Carolina, for his sophomore season and later played at Vertical Academy in Charlotte as a junior. He returned to San Ysidro for his senior season, averaging 23.8 points, 9.2 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game. He was rated a four-star recruit in the 2023 class by major recruiting services.

Williams committed to the University of Memphis in November 2022 but did not appear in a game for the Tigers, earning a redshirt during the 2023-24 season. He entered the NCAA transfer portal during that season and announced a move to the University of Central Florida in January 2024.

At UCF, Williams played in 18 games, starting five, and averaged 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Injuries caused him to miss the first 10 games and the end of the season. He scored a season-high 14 points twice and grabbed seven rebounds in two games.

Williams transferred to Sacramento State for the 2025-26 season. He started all 21 games in which he appeared and averaged 17.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 35.1 minutes per game. He was Sacramento State's second-leading scorer overall and its leading scorer in conference play, where his 20.1-point average ranked third in the Big Sky Conference. His season included a career-high 34 points at Idaho State and a 30-point performance against UC Santa Barbara.

Williams was arrested in Jamul, California, on April 13, 2023, on five charges of assault with a deadly weapon and was released on $50,000 bail the following day. He pleaded not guilty to multiple assault charges on April 20. Preliminary hearings were postponed several times during 2023.

In October 2023, a judge ordered Williams to stand trial on six felony gun charges, while additional felony charges were filed during his arraignment. On November 30, 2023, Williams pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor charge and was ordered to complete classes.

Williams built a substantial social media following while still in high school. He had more than one million Instagram followers before beginning high school, nearly two million by the end of his freshman year and 3.2 million by the end of his sophomore year. His followers included Drake, LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

In July 2021, Williams signed with Excel Sports Management to pursue name, image and likeness opportunities. In October of that year, at age 17, he signed a multiyear endorsement deal with Puma, becoming the first American high school basketball player to sign a sneaker deal with a global footwear company. Puma later ended the endorsement deal following his legal issues.
