Bo Bassett

Bowen William Bassett grew up in Pennsylvania and became interested in wrestling while following Spencer Lee, whom he has called his favorite wrestler and an inspiration. Bassett and Lee later trained together at the Young Guns Wrestling Club in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania.

Bassett attended Forest Hills Junior-Senior High School before transferring to Bishop McCort High School in 2021. The move followed the removal of his father, William Bassett, as Forest Hills' junior varsity wrestling coach. William Bassett subsequently became Bishop McCort's head varsity wrestling coach, although the PIAA issued him a two-year coaching ban after a recruiting-policy violation.

Bassett compiled a 170-0 folkstyle record at Bishop McCort. He won three PIAA Class AA state championships, four Super 32 titles, four Walsh Jesuit Ironman titles and three Powerade Wrestling Tournament championships. His fourth Super 32 victory made him the first four-time champion in the tournament's boys' division.

Bassett was widely regarded as the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 high school class. His dominance also prompted criticism connected to his reclassification, as he had been held back a year in school and was therefore older than some of his opponents.

Bassett won freestyle and Greco-Roman gold medals at the 2021 U17 Pan American Wrestling Championships. Later that year, at age 14, he won the freestyle title at the U17 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, becoming the youngest world champion in wrestling history. He lost his opening Greco-Roman match at the same event to Russia's Ruslan Lukiaev.

In 2024, Bassett won U20 Pan American gold and took bronze at the U20 World Wrestling Championships. At the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials Last Chance Qualifier, he defeated four opponents, including former NCAA Division I champion Anthony Ashnault, before losing to Matthew Kolodzik in the final. Bassett added gold at the 2025 Junior Pan American Games and won both the senior and U20 65-kilogram brackets at the 2026 U.S. Open.

Bassett initially committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2025, choosing Iowa over programs that included Penn State, Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech. He later decommitted from Iowa and committed to Virginia Tech, where he is set to begin wrestling for the Hokies in 2026.

His adopted brother, Melvin Miller, also committed to Virginia Tech, with Miller scheduled to join the program in 2027. Their younger brother, Keegan Bassett, is also a wrestler and is identified as a U17 world champion.

Bassett is signed to the featherweight division of Real American Freestyle. He made his RAF debut at RAF 03 in Chicago on November 29, 2025.

In that debut, Bassett pinned former NCAA champion Darrion Caldwell in the first period. He has also trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as preparation for a possible future transition to mixed martial arts.
