Rey Mysterio is an American professional wrestler and actor known for winning the 2006 Royal Rumble and the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22. He became one of the most recognizable masked wrestlers through his high-flying lucha libre style and signature 619.

Personal life

Rey Mysterio has been married to Angie Mysterio since 1996, and they have two children, Dominik and Aalyah. His family has appeared alongside him on wrestling programs, including during the 2005 storyline involving Dominik and Eddie Guerrero.

Mysterio is the nephew of wrestler Rey Misterio, Sr., who trained him early in his career. He has also been associated with San Diego through his wrestling identity and the 619, his signature move.

Lucha libre beginnings and WCW

Mysterio made his professional wrestling debut in 1989 under the name Colibrí, Spanish for hummingbird. Trained by his uncle Rey Misterio, Sr., he developed the high-flying lucha libre style that became his trademark. He worked for Asistencia Asesoría y Administración from 1992 to 1995, Extreme Championship Wrestling from 1995 to 1996, and World Championship Wrestling from 1996 to 2001.

He debuted in WCW against Dean Malenko at The Great American Bash in 1996 and later won the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship. His rivalries with Eddie Guerrero and Psicosis helped establish him as a leading cruiserweight performer. In 1999, Mysterio was forced to remove his mask after losing a Hair vs. Mask match against Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, after which he became known as a "Giant Killer" for defeating larger opponents such as Kevin Nash, Scott Norton, and Bam Bam Bigelow.

During his WCW run, Mysterio won the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship, the WCW World Tag Team Championship, and the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship. He also performed as a member of the Filthy Animals alongside Eddie Guerrero and Billy Kidman.

WWE debut and championship career

Mysterio joined WWE in 2002 and made his debut on SmackDown against Chavo Guerrero. He soon formed a tag team with Edge, and the pair won the WWE Tag Team Championship in November 2002. Mysterio later captured the WWE Cruiserweight Championship and continued competing in both singles and tag team divisions.

His defining WWE breakthrough came at the 2006 Royal Rumble. Entering at number two, Mysterio won the match after lasting more than 62 minutes and earning a World Heavyweight Championship opportunity at WrestleMania 22. He defeated Randy Orton and Kurt Angle in the main event to win his first World Heavyweight Championship, dedicating the victory to Eddie Guerrero.

Mysterio won the World Heavyweight Championship for a second time at Fatal 4-Way in 2010. In July 2011, he defeated The Miz in the finals of a tournament for the vacant WWE Championship. His other WWE honors include two Intercontinental Championships, three United States Championships, four WWE Tag Team Championships, and three WWE Cruiserweight Championships. These victories made him WWE's 21st Triple Crown Champion.

Return to AAA, Lucha Underground and WWE

After leaving WWE in 2015, Mysterio returned to AAA and competed in the Lucha Libre World Cup with Myzteziz and El Patrón Alberto. The team won the tournament, with Mysterio pinning Johnny Mundo in a sudden-death singles match in the final. He also defeated Myzteziz at Triplemanía XXIII.

Mysterio joined Lucha Underground in 2015 and won the Lucha Underground Trios Championship with Dragon Azteca Jr. and Prince Puma. He also made a New Japan Pro-Wrestling appearance in 2018, teaming with Jushin Thunder Liger and Hiroshi Tanahashi.

He returned to WWE competition at the 2018 Royal Rumble and later signed a two-year WWE deal. His WWE career also included a tag team partnership with his son Dominik. Together, Rey and Dominik became the first father-son team to win WWE tag team championship gold.

Signature style and legacy

Mysterio's wrestling is built around speed, aerial attacks, and the lucha libre tradition. His signature moves include the 619, the West Coast Pop, the springboard seated senton, and the frog splash, which he adopted as a tribute to Eddie Guerrero. The 619 is named after the San Diego area code.

His size and high-flying style made him a prominent figure in the rise of cruiserweight wrestling in the United States. WWE has described him as the smallest wrestler to hold the World Heavyweight Championship, and his career earned him the nickname "The Ultimate Underdog."

Mysterio was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2023. His screen work includes appearances as himself in Ready to Rumble, WCW Monday Nitro, Lucha Underground, and WWE SmackDown!.
